Clinical Personal Training in Southampton
You’ve tried getting back to the gym three times this year. Each time, something flares up within a week, and you’re back to square one, frustrated and doubting your body.
You know you need to stay active. But every time you try, the same old injury resurfaces. Maybe it’s persistent joint pain, an old shoulder issue, or simply not knowing what’s safe to do anymore. Standard personal training doesn’t work for you because generic fitness plans don’t account for your injury history, your pain patterns, or your body’s specific needs.
You need expert clinical guidance to move safely, build strength, and stay injury-free.
That’s where Clinical Personal Training at Southampton Physio comes in.
Personal Training That's Backed by Science, Guided by Clinicians
Clinical Personal Training (CPT) at Southampton Physio is strength and movement coaching designed for people with injury history, persistent pain, or complex bodies.
Unlike standard personal training, CPT is delivered by qualified physiotherapists and osteopaths who understand pain, injury mechanics, and rehabilitation. We don’t just make you sweat. We help you build real, lasting strength without the fear of making things worse.
Whether you’re recovering from injury, managing a long-term condition, or simply want expert guidance to train safely, CPT gives you the clinical expertise you need to move forward with confidence.
What is Clinical Personal Training?
Clinical Personal Training bridges the gap between physiotherapy and independent training. It’s for people who need more than generic gym programmes but don’t require ongoing acute care.
Who is it for?
CPT is designed for:
- Anyone recovering from an injury such as back pain , shoulder problems , or knee injuries who wants to rebuild strength safely and sustainably
- People managing persistent pain , joint issues, or conditions like hypermobility or arthritis
- Athletes or active people who want to prevent injuries and optimise performance
- Anyone who's tried standard personal training but found it doesn't work for their body
- People who've completed physiotherapy and want to maintain their progress long-term
You don’t need to be “gym-ready” or super fit. CPT meets you where you are and builds from there.
What Conditions Can Clinical Personal Training Help With?
CPT is particularly effective for people who’ve completed initial rehab and want to build long-term strength and resilience. We often work with:
- Back pain : Building core strength and movement confidence after acute flare-ups settle
- Shoulder injuries : Restoring overhead strength and preventing re-injury after rotator cuff issues
- Knee problems : Rebuilding leg strength after ACL repairs, meniscus issues, or patellofemoral pain
- Hip pain and arthritis : Maintaining mobility and reducing pain through targeted strength work
- Hypermobility and EDS : Stabilising joints and building capacity safely
- Persistent pain : Retraining your nervous system through graded strength exposure
- Sports injuries : Returning to your sport stronger and more resilient than before
- Post-surgical rehab : Bridging the gap between discharge and full function

How We're Different
1. Train with a Team of Experts
Your Clinical Personal Trainer is a qualified physiotherapist or osteopath with advanced training in strength, movement, and rehabilitation. We understand how injuries happen, how pain works, and how to progress you safely. You’re not guessing—you’re working with a clinician.
2. A Training Plan That Fits Your Body
No cookie-cutter programmes. We take into account your injury history, pain triggers, movement limitations, and personal goals. Whether you’re managing shoulder pain or rebuilding after ACL surgery, your programme is built around what YOUR body needs.
3. Injury Prevention and Long-Term Strength
Research shows that most injuries come from poor movement patterns, weaknesses, or overload that’s gone unnoticed. CPT identifies and addresses these issues before they become problems. We don’t just get you strong—we keep you strong.
Many of our CPT clients started exactly where you are now—frustrated with recurring injuries or unsure how to train safely. Let’s build a plan that works for your body.
What to Expect
Step 1: Clinical Movement Assessment
Your first session includes a thorough assessment of your movement, strength, injury history, and goals. We’ll identify any weaknesses, imbalances, or compensations that might be holding you back or increasing your injury risk.
Step 2: Personalised Strength and Rehab Plan
Based on your assessment, we create a tailored training programme designed to build strength, improve movement quality, and reduce pain. Whether you need corrective exercises, progressive loading, or rehab-focused strength work, we design your training to fit you. If you’ve recently completed your treatment plan, CPT is the natural next step to maintain your progress.
Step 3: Train, Adapt and Progress
You’ll train with us in our fully equipped gym at our Bedford Place clinic in Southampton. We guide you through each session, adjusting exercises based on how your body responds. As you get stronger and more confident, we progress your programme to keep challenging you safely.
Step 4: Ongoing Support and Education
CPT isn’t just about the exercises—it’s about understanding your body. We teach you how to manage flare-ups, adapt training when needed, and recognise when to push and when to back off. Our goal is to make you independent and resilient.
Benefits of Clinical Personal Training
- Train without fear: Move confidently knowing you're working with clinicians who understand your body and injury history

Benefits of Clinical Personal Training
“Ian was recommended to me when I was not recovering from rotator cuff and AC joint pain in my shoulder. I was in constant pain—unable to sleep, could not reach above my head, dressing and driving were painful, and I had stopped strength training. Following his guidance over six weeks, I saw around 70% improvement—pain reduction and improved mobility. I’ve been able to slowly reintroduce weights, dance more freely, and am no longer in constant pain.”
“Excellent experience so far. I looked for a hypermobility physio that would help me stabilise my core and relieve my chronic pain from SIJ instability. The assessment was very thorough and I felt at ease. Ian was brilliant and I felt understood. We devised a plan with exercises, and only two weeks down the line I feel the pain has reduced and my function has already improved.”
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is clinical personal training?
Clinical Personal Training is strength and movement coaching delivered by qualified physiotherapists or osteopaths. It’s designed for people with injury history, pain, or complex bodies who need expert guidance to train safely and effectively. Unlike standard personal training, CPT integrates clinical knowledge of pain, injury, and rehabilitation into every session.
Is this just like personal training?
No. Standard personal trainers focus on fitness and performance but may not have the clinical knowledge to work safely with injury, pain, or complex conditions. Clinical Personal Trainers are healthcare professionals who understand how injuries happen, how pain works, and how to adapt training to your body’s specific needs.
Do I need to have an injury to sign up?
Not necessarily. While many CPT clients have injury history or ongoing pain, others simply want expert guidance to train safely and prevent injuries. If you’re active, aging, or have a complex body (hypermobility, arthritis, etc.), CPT can help you stay strong and resilient long-term.
Can I use this to complement my physiotherapy?
Yes. Many people use CPT alongside their physiotherapy treatment, particularly if they’re managing a long-term condition. CPT focuses on building strength and capacity, while physiotherapy addresses acute flare-ups or specific issues. We’ll coordinate your care to ensure both approaches work together effectively.
What results can I expect?
- Less pain and better movement
- Increased strength and resilience
- More confidence in exercise and daily life
- A long-term plan to stay active and injury-free
How much does CPT cost?
CPT sessions are priced to reflect the comprehensive clinical expertise you’re getting. You’re working with qualified physiotherapists and osteopaths who understand injury, pain, and rehabilitation—not just fitness coaching.
Many clients find CPT more cost-effective long-term because it prevents recurring injuries and reduces the need for reactive physio appointments. We also offer block booking options for ongoing programmes.
For current pricing and package options, contact us or discuss this during your initial assessment.
How is CPT different from physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy focuses on diagnosing and treating acute pain or injury, getting you from “injured” to “functional.” CPT picks up where physio leaves off, focusing on building long-term strength, resilience, and performance.
Think of it this way:
- Physiotherapy: Resolves the immediate problem (pain relief, mobility restoration, initial rehab)
- CPT: Builds capacity so the problem doesn't come back (ongoing strength work, injury prevention, performance optimisation)
Many people transition from physiotherapy into CPT once their acute issue is resolved. You can also complement ongoing physio treatment with CPT if you’re managing a long-term condition.
How long are sessions and how often?
CPT sessions are typically 45 to 60 minutes and take place in our fully equipped gym at our Bedford Place clinic in Southampton.
Most clients train once or twice per week, depending on their goals and availability. We’ll discuss the right frequency for you during your initial assessment. Some people need more frequent sessions to build momentum; others do well with weekly check-ins.
As you progress and build confidence, we may adjust the frequency to suit your evolving needs.
