Snippet: Evidence-based physiotherapy and rehab for whiplash in Southampton: move safely, recover faster, prevent long-term problems.

What is whiplash?

Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a sudden, forceful movement of the head – often forwards and backwards – similar to the motion of a whip cracking. This rapid acceleration and deceleration can strain the muscles, ligaments and other soft tissues in the neck.

The most common cause is a road traffic accident, particularly a rear-end collision. However, whiplash can also happen during sports (such as rugby or boxing), falls or any incident that jolts the head unexpectedly.

How whiplash develops
When the head is thrown forwards and then backwards (or vice versa), the neck tissues are suddenly stretched and then compressed. This can cause small tears, inflammation and a protective tightening of the muscles. In some cases, symptoms appear immediately. In others, pain and stiffness may not develop until several hours – or even a day – after the injury.

Acute vs chronic whiplash

At Southampton Physio, we treat both acute and persistent whiplash. Our aim is to get you moving safely as soon as possible, avoiding the common trap of prolonged rest that can delay recovery.

Symptoms and when to seek help

Whiplash symptoms can vary from mild discomfort to significant pain and stiffness. They may affect not only the neck but also surrounding areas such as the shoulders, upper back and head.
Common symptoms include
Some people also experience jaw pain, tingling in the arms or visual disturbances. These may indicate irritation of nerves in the neck.
If you have neck pain, stiffness or headaches after an accident or sudden movement, book an appointment promptly. Research suggests that early assessment and guided movement can shorten recovery time and reduce the risk of long-term symptoms.

At Southampton Physio, our approach is evidence-based and tailored to you. We combine short-term symptom relief with long-term improvements in movement, strength and confidence.
